Amb Lok Bahadur Thapa elected President of UN Economic and Social Council

KATHMANDU: Nepal’s Permanent Representative to the United Nations in New York, Ambassador Lok Bahadur Thapa, has been elected as the President of the United Nations Economic and Social Council (ECOSOC) for the upcoming year.

The election took place on Thursday at the UN headquarters in New York. Ambassador Thapa said the election was a “historic moment” for Nepal and emphasized the need to strengthen multilateral partnerships for the effective implementation of the 2030 Sustainable Development Agenda. He said, “Delivering good results is not just an option, it is necessary,” and added that the council would focus on unity, empowerment, and commitment.

Four vice presidents were also elected along with Thapa. They are:

Amar Bendjama from Algeria

Héctor Gómez Hernández from Spain

Wellington Darío Bencosme Castaños from the Dominican Republic

Paruyr Hovhannisyan from Armenia

The UN Economic and Social Council (ECOSOC) is one of the six principal organs of the United Nations. It works to promote international economic and social cooperation and development. ECOSOC has 54 member countries, elected by the UN General Assembly for three-year terms on a rotating basis.
