PM Oli urges social media platforms to register and pay taxes

KATHMANDU: Prime Minister KP Sharma Oli has emphasized that global social media platforms operating in Nepal must come under the country’s legal and tax jurisdiction, asserting that Nepal is rapidly becoming an attractive destination for investment in digital technology and renewable energy.

Speaking at the inaugural session of the Digital Nepal Conclave 2025, organized by ICT Foundation on Friday, the Prime Minister said that all social networking platforms in Nepal are required to register under Nepali law, pay taxes, and comply with national regulations.

“The Government of Nepal must know about all business activities taking place in the country related to information technology, and every social media platform operating here must fulfill legal obligations and pay taxes accordingly,” PM Oli stated. He added that he has already instructed the Ministry of Communication and Information Technology to initiate necessary regulatory measures.

Highlighting Nepal’s growing potential in IT and green energy sectors, PM Oli said, “Nepal is an appropriate destination for digital technology and green energy. We must leverage artificial intelligence (AI) extensively for national development and prosperity.”

He assured the private sector of full government support in expanding ICT-based ventures domestically and internationally. “Invest in IT with confidence – the government is with you,” he said, urging local entrepreneurs to move forward boldly.

He also recalled how, during his visit to Rukum, he learned that even elderly women in remote villages now use Facebook, illustrating how rapidly digital literacy is spreading across the country.

Citing improvements in online education, the prime minister said that over 150,000 students benefited from virtual classes after SEE examinations were conducted through online platforms last year as per his earlier announcement. He stressed the need to protect children from harmful aspects of excessive mobile phone use while promoting digital tools for education and innovation.

The government has recently approved a national AI policy, PM Oli noted, stating that Nepal is focused on transforming its technology sector and encouraging domestic as well as foreign investment in digital infrastructure.

He expressed concern that some individuals were spreading negativity by ignoring the country’s technological progress. “Despite remarkable development in the IT sector, some people intentionally spread disappointment,” he noted.

PM Oli asserted that the current government has a clear position on ensuring political stability, good governance, and development through the effective use of information technology. He underscored that the state will actively encourage the private sector in these areas.

He also remarked that proper use of ICT can enhance governance and significantly reduce corruption. “By developing ICT, improving human behavior, and legal compliance, corruption can be brought to zero,” he said.
