Unregistered social media platforms to be disabled in Nepal: PM’s chief adviser

KATHMANDU: Prime Minister’s Chief Adviser Bishnu Rimal has said that unregistered social media platforms in Nepal will soon be deactivated in line with a Supreme Court order.

Sharing the information via Facebook, Rimal recalled that the Supreme Court had ordered a halt on operations of platforms that fail to appoint a local point of contact, establish self-regulation, and designate a residential grievance officer until they are officially registered in Nepal.

“Possibly due to the antisocial behavior of some undesirable elements and the irresponsible acts of certain individuals, the Supreme Court has directed that unless these companies are registered, with contact points and grievance mechanisms in place, they will be restricted,” Rimal stated.

He further noted that all unregistered social media and online platforms are likely to be disabled as part of the enforcement.

Rimal added that while social media has become an inseparable part of people’s daily lives, it is important that these platforms undergo proper registration so that users can continue to use them in a regulated and accountable environment.
