US welcomes appointment of Sushila Karki as Nepal’s interim prime minister

KATHMANDU: The United States has welcomed the appointment of Rt. Hon. Sushila Karki as the Prime Minister of Nepal’s interim government, expressing hope for stability and democratic progress in the country.

In a press release issued by the US Embassy in Kathmandu, Washington commended the restoration of calm and a peaceful resolution following last week’s tragic events that claimed dozens of lives during the Gen Z movement.

“We commend President Ramchandra Paudel and youth leaders for their commitment to a democratic solution, even as we continue to mourn with Nepal over its losses,” the statement read. The embassy also recognized the Nepali Army and Chief of Army Staff General Ashok Raj Sigdel for their “vital role in restoring order and facilitating a peaceful transition of civilian government.”

The US further noted its readiness to work closely with the interim administration led by Prime Minister Karki in the months ahead, particularly as Nepal prepares for new elections.

The statement underlined Washington’s continued support for Nepal’s democratic institutions, political stability, and peacebuilding efforts, while reaffirming the importance of partnership between Nepal and the United States.
