KATHMANDU: The government has estimated that around Rs 12.38 billion will be required to reconstruct the road infrastructures severely damaged by floods and landslides triggered by heavy monsoon rains on October 4, 5, and 6 (Ashoj 18–20) and earlier this year.
According to the Ministry of Physical Infrastructure and Transport (MoPIT), the total cost includes Rs 10.68 billion for the reconstruction of highways, alternative routes, bailey bridges, and permanent bridges destroyed during the monsoon disasters this year. Additionally, Rs 1.70 billion remains allocated for structures damaged in last year’s disasters.
Minister for Energy, Water Resources and Irrigation; Physical Infrastructure and Transport; and Urban Development, Kulman Ghising, said that reopening blocked roads and highways has been placed under the government’s highest priority. “All concerned agencies have been mobilized with necessary equipment and workforce to resume road operations at the earliest. Regular monitoring is being carried out from both the ministry and my office,” Ghising stated.
Among the affected infrastructure, the Mechi Highway has suffered the most severe damage, requiring an estimated Rs 1.5 billion for reconstruction. Similarly, the reconstruction of the Koshi, Mid-Hill, Hulaki, Arniko, Prithvi, and Narayanghat–Muglin highways is expected to cost around Rs 3.77 billion in total.
The ministry further estimated that Rs 4.52 billion will be needed to rebuild 17 permanent bridges that were damaged across various parts of the country. Likewise, about Rs 800 million is expected to be required for new bailey bridges, while Rs 1.59 billion will be allocated for the reconstruction of alternative routes.
Officials said that rapid restoration of damaged roads is vital for ensuring smooth mobility, supply chain stability, and economic recovery across Nepal’s hilly and mountainous regions. The ministry also reaffirmed that the ongoing works are being coordinated with provincial and local governments for efficiency and transparency.
