KATHMANDU: The total insurance claim amount for damages caused during the recent nationwide protests has reached approximately Rs 23.22 billion as of Wednesday (October 8, 2025), according to the Insurance Authority of Nepal.
The damages include losses to physical infrastructure, vehicles, business properties, and other assets affected during the violent demonstrations held across several parts of the country.
As per the authority, a total of 3,099 insurance claims have been filed with 14 non-life insurance companies and 4 micro non-life insurance companies so far. Out of the total claims, the companies have already disbursed Rs 1.29 billion as advance payments to the affected policyholders.
To assess the extent of the damage, 2,706 surveyors were deployed nationwide. Among them, 374 survey reports have already been submitted to the authority, while the remaining reports are still under review.
Officials at the insurance authority stated that the claim amount could rise further once all the surveys and verification processes are completed. They also urged insurance companies to expedite the settlement process to ensure that the affected businesses and individuals can recover quickly.
The recent unrest, which severely disrupted trade, transport, and private businesses, has raised concerns about Nepal’s fragile economic stability and the potential burden on the insurance sector. Industry experts say the claims are among the highest in Nepal’s insurance history, reflecting both the magnitude of the protests and the growing exposure of the insurance market to political and social unrest.
Economic analysts warn that the surge in claims could impact the insurance companies’ solvency ratios and increase premium rates in the future, affecting business confidence and investment flows in Nepal.
The Insurance Board has announced it will closely monitor the claim settlements to ensure transparency and timely compensation.
