KATHMANDU: Severe weather conditions in Kathmandu on Thursday disrupted air travel, forcing multiple international and domestic flights to divert or cancel schedules from Tribhuvan International Airport (TIA). Heavy cloud cover and poor visibility over the Capital led to a series of aircraft being rerouted, impacting passengers traveling into Nepal ahead of the festive and trekking season.
According to Tribhuvan International Airport authorities, a Nepal Airlines flight arriving from Doha, Qatar, was diverted to New Delhi after the aircraft was unable to safely land in Kathmandu airspace due to low visibility. Airport officials confirmed that an Air India flight from Delhi was diverted to Lucknow, while another IndiGo Airlines flight attempting to land in Kathmandu was compelled to return to Delhi.
The disruptions were not limited to international operations. Domestic flights, particularly those flying to mountainous airports such as Lukla, also faced cancellations and delays. All scheduled morning flights to Lukla — a gateway to the Everest region — were canceled as low visibility made safe takeoffs and landings impossible.
Airport officials stated that visibility levels dropped below operational minimums, leaving air traffic controllers and airlines no option but to divert or hold aircraft for extended periods. The incident caused delays across the airport’s schedule, affecting hundreds of passengers, including tourists, migrant workers, and connecting travelers.
The Civil Aviation Authority of Nepal (CAAN) has urged passengers to stay in contact with airlines for updated schedules as weather-related disruptions could continue throughout the day.
