NIC Asia Bank appoints Sujit Shakya as new CEO; Brings over three decades of banking leadership experience

KATHMANDU: NIC Asia Bank has appointed Sujit Shakya as its new Chief Executive Officer (CEO). A meeting of the bank’s Board of Directors held on Kartik 17 decided to appoint Shakya to the top executive position, Company Secretary Dipen Karki confirmed. Shakya has been appointed for a four-year term and will assume office within the next 30 days, according to the bank.

Before joining NIC Asia, Shakya served as the Senior Deputy Chief Executive Officer (Senior DCEO) at Nabil Bank, where he played a key role in corporate governance, credit portfolio leadership, digital banking expansion, and strategic financial operations. His appointment is being viewed as a strategic move as NIC Asia continues to strengthen its competitive positioning in Nepal’s commercial banking and digital financial service landscape.

Shakya holds a Post Graduate Diploma in Business Management from the Institute of Productivity Management in Lucknow, India. He began his banking career in 1996 at Nepal Sri Lanka Merchant Bank.

Over the past three decades, Shakya has worked in several major Nepali commercial banks:

  • Himalayan Bank (July 1997 – April 2005)
  • Laxmi Sunrise Bank (April 2005 – July 2007)
  • Bank of Asia Nepal (Oct 2007 – June 2013)
  • NIC Asia Bank (June 2013 – Feb 2017)
  • Civil Bank (March 2017 – April 2019)
  • Janata Bank (April 2019 – December 2019)
  • Global IME Bank (Dec 2019 – Aug 2020)
  • Nabil Bank (Aug 2020 – present as Senior DCEO)

Having worked across credit management, retail and corporate banking, branch expansion strategy, digital transformation, merger-integrated banking systems, and risk & compliance, Shakya is regarded as one of the senior executives with diversified leadership exposure in Nepal’s financial sector.

Industry observers say the appointment signals NIC Asia’s intention to push forward on expansion-driven strategies, technological modernization, corporate efficiency, and competitive product innovation in Nepal’s highly dynamic banking market.
