KATHMANDU: The government is set to operate a buffalo and cattle promotion program with the objective of increasing the nation’s meat exports. The Ministry of Agriculture and Livestock Development has prepared operational procedures to provide up to 50 percent subsidy to farmers and livestock entrepreneurs under this initiative.
According to the procedure, the program will be implemented under the National Agriculture Modernization Program, focusing on encouraging the production of healthy buffaloes and cattle required for commercial meat supply in domestic and international markets.
The ministry stated that the initiative aims to increase farmers’ income by strengthening commercial livestock farming and improving the supply chain for meat production.
What the Subsidy Covers
The operational guideline includes support for the following activities:
Purchase and transportation of calves
Construction or improvement of livestock sheds
Cultivation and management of fodder crops
Procurement of livestock farming tools and equipment
Access to veterinary and technical support services
Farmers and enterprises involved in these activities will be eligible to receive up to 50% grant subsidy.
The guidelines require that calves or buffaloes be purchased from government or private breeding centers, depending on availability. Applicants must submit formal applications to receive the subsidy.
However, if the actual expenditure exceeds the approved cost-sharing amount mentioned in the agreement, the additional cost must be borne by the beneficiary, as clarified by the ministry.
