Process to appoint NAC GM moves forward, Applications invited amid PM’s intervention

KATHMANDU: The long-delayed process to appoint a new General Manager (GM) at Nepal Airlines Corporation (NAC) has finally advanced, as the selection committee on Wednesday announced a public call for applications.

The Ministry of Culture, Tourism and Civil Aviation published a notice inviting eligible candidates to apply within 15 days to fill the vacant GM post through an open and competitive process. According to the notice, interested applicants must submit their applications to the ministry’s office at Singha Durbar, Kathmandu, along with required documents, as detailed on the ministry’s official website.

The public call follows Prime Minister Sushila Karki’s recent move seeking clarification from Tourism Secretary Hari Prasad Mainali on November 10 (Kartik 25) over the delay in the recruitment process. The Prime Minister had earlier formed the selection committee under Mainali’s coordination on October 31 (Kartik 14), directing it to recommend a qualified candidate within a month.

However, no progress had been made since the committee’s formation, prompting PM Karki to question Mainali in the presence of Finance Secretary Ghanshyam Upadhyay for the failure to convene even a single meeting. The Prime Minister currently holds the tourism portfolio herself.

With today’s announcement, the selection committee has begun the formal competitive process to appoint a new chief executive for the national flag carrier. The notice outlines details regarding eligibility, required experience, evaluation methods, remuneration, and facilities.

Nepal Airlines has remained without a permanent head since November 7 (Kartik 21), when outgoing Executive Chairman Yubraj Adhikari completed his term. Janakraj Kalakheti has since been serving as the acting General Manager.

The decision to expedite the recruitment process comes amid rising pressure on the government to strengthen governance, transparency, and efficiency in the state-owned airline — a crucial player in Nepal’s tourism and aviation sector.
