Snowfall begins in high Himalayan regions, Bringing relief and hope for farmers

KATHMANDU: Snowfall has begun in several high Himalayan regions of Nepal, a development expected to favor farmers by improving soil moisture and supporting winter and upcoming agricultural activities.

According to the Department of Hydrology and Meteorology, snowfall has been recorded in higher elevations, including areas around Pathibhara in Taplejung. The weather authority has also forecast rainfall in some high-altitude and adjoining regions over the coming days.

Meteorological officials state that the snowfall and associated precipitation will help replenish moisture levels in agricultural land, particularly benefiting winter crops and preparing the ground for future planting. In snow-fed regions, gradual snowmelt is expected to contribute to sustained water availability for farming and livestock in the months ahead.

Farmers in Himalayan and trans-Himalayan areas have welcomed the snowfall, as prolonged dry conditions in recent weeks had raised concerns about soil dryness and reduced productivity. Adequate snowfall during winter is considered critical for maintaining soil fertility and ensuring balanced water supply during the early stages of the farming cycle.

The weather authority noted that while snowfall may temporarily affect transportation and daily activities in high-altitude settlements, its overall impact on agriculture is positive. Snow accumulation acts as natural insulation for crops and pastureland, protecting them from extreme cold while preserving moisture.

Officials have advised farmers and local authorities to remain alert to weather updates, especially in regions prone to heavy snowfall, avalanches, or sudden temperature drops. However, from an agricultural perspective, the current weather pattern is seen as supportive of farming activities and long-term productivity.

Further updates will be issued as weather conditions evolve, the department said, adding that winter precipitation remains a key factor for agricultural sustainability in Nepal’s mountain regions.
