KATHMANDU – NIC Asia Bank has expressed the most serious concern over the growing insecurity of banking staff following a violent incident at its Itahari branch. In a formal statement, the bank warned that such ‘anarchic activities’ are making the entire banking sector feel unsafe.
The alarm was raised after an individual entered the Itahari branch on Monday, verbally abused the staff and created a chaotic environment. According to the bank, the situation turned life-threatening when the individual reportedly sprinkled petrol and attempted to start a fire, claiming they would commit self-immolation.
Threatening essential ServicesThe bank emphasized that financial institutions provide essential services and should be treated as sensitive areas. “Any illegal activity in a place like a bank is unacceptable,” the press release stated. “These actions have created an insecure atmosphere not just for our employees, but for the entire banking community.”
The bank’s leadership pointed out that such incidents—ranging from shouting and harassment to arson attempts—have left employees feeling constant fear while performing their duties.
Bank calls for interventionNIC Asia Bank has officially requested the government and local authorities to take strict legal action against those involved in the attack. They are also calling for better security measures to protect bank branches across the country.
Interestingly, it was later revealed that the person leading the group and threatening to set fire to the office was not even a borrower or client of NIC Asia Bank. This has led to further concerns that banks are being unfairly targeted by organized groups looking to create unrest.
Growing Safety ConcernsThis incident highlights a worrying trend of physical threats against bank employees in Nepal. The bank argued that if the government does not act quickly to punish these individuals, it could disrupt the essential financial services that the public relies on every day.
