KATHMANDU – Access to communication services continues to expand across Nepal, with 95.5 percent of households now having access to a telephone, either a landline or mobile connection, according to the latest national MICS survey. The data underline the rapid penetration of mobile technology even in geographically challenging regions.
Bagmati Province leads in communication access, where 97.1 percent of households have telephone connectivity. The province benefits from urban concentration, better telecom infrastructure, and stronger digital adoption trends. At the other end, Sudurpashchim Province reports the lowest access rate at 92.6 percent, reflecting persistent connectivity barriers in far-western Nepal.
Telecommunications analysts say the high national penetration rate signals Nepal’s transition toward a more digitally connected society. However, access does not necessarily mean quality, as rural network stability and internet speeds still vary considerably.
The MICS data also demonstrate how mobile connectivity is reshaping social and economic participation, enabling households to access banking, digital payments, government services, and information networks. Policymakers view telecom infrastructure as a foundation for Nepal’s broader digital economy ambitions.
