Ramechhap bus tragedy: Death toll rises to 12, Armed Police divers continue river search

KATHMANDU: The death toll from the bus accident in Ramechhap district has climbed to 12, as search and rescue operations continue in the Tamakoshi River, local authorities confirmed.

Chief District Officer (CDO) of Ramechhap, Shyam Krishna Thapa, said that three more bodies were recovered from the river during ongoing search efforts, bringing the total fatalities to nine. According to him, six victims died during treatment at hospitals, while three bodies were found at the accident site.

The bus, en route from Kathmandu to Pokali in Okhaldhunga via Dhobi, Ramechhap, plunged off the road into the Tamakoshi River earlier in the day. Police identified the vehicle as bearing registration number Province 03–01–995 Kh 9975. The accident occurred near Machanetar in Ramechhap this morning.

Rescue and Medical Response

Rescued passengers have been transported to Manthali and Khurkot for medical treatment. Authorities have not yet confirmed the total number of passengers on board at the time of the crash.

According to the Araniko Transport Committee, five passengers had purchased tickets from Jadibuti and three from Chabahil in Kathmandu. It remains unclear whether additional passengers boarded the bus along the route.

Search Operation Ongoing

The bus reportedly fell from the roadway and is submerged in the river, complicating rescue efforts. A diver team from the Armed Police Force is continuing search operations in the river, CDO Thapa said, indicating that the casualty figure could change as the search progresses.

Security personnel and local authorities remain deployed at the site as investigations into the cause of the crash are underway.
