KATHMANDU: The Birgunj Customs Office has collected Rs 135.48 billion in revenue during the first seven months of the current fiscal year, achieving 88.07 percent of its target for the period, officials said.
The office had aimed to collect Rs 153.84 billion in revenue by the end of the seven-month period but fell short of the target despite maintaining strong monthly collections.
Information Officer Uday Singh Bista stated that revenue mobilisation during the review period remained encouraging, with steady inflows recorded across most months.
According to the customs data, the office collected:
Rs 18.44 billion in Shrawan
Rs 20.73 billion in Bhadra
Rs 19.09 billion in Ashoj
Rs 17.33 billion in Kartik
Rs 20.80 billion in Mangsir
Rs 20.20 billion in Poush
For Magh alone, the customs office had set a target of Rs 21.29 billion, but the actual collection stood at Rs 18.90 billion, indicating a notable shortfall for the month.
The Department of Customs Nepal has assigned the Birgunj office an annual revenue target of Rs 273.39 billion, underscoring its critical role as Nepal’s largest trade gateway handling the bulk of imports through the southern border with India.
Birgunj customs is considered the backbone of Nepal’s revenue system, contributing the highest share of customs income due to its connection with the country’s main dry port and industrial trade corridor. Any slowdown in imports, currency fluctuations, policy changes, or shifts in industrial demand directly affect its revenue performance.
Officials say meeting the annual target will depend heavily on import trends in the remaining months of the fiscal year, fuel demand, vehicle imports, and overall economic activity tied to Nepal’s trade cycle with India and third-country markets.
