Govt collects Rs 5 billion in land revenue in Magh as property transactions remain weak

KATHMANDU: Nepal’s government collected just over Rs 5 billion in revenue from land and property transactions during the month of Magh, indicating that the real estate market has yet to show strong recovery momentum.

According to the Department of Land Management and Archives, land revenue offices across the country collected a total of Rs 5.09 billion in Magh. The figure is slightly lower than the Rs 5.17 billion collected in the previous month of Poush, showing a month-on-month decline in property-related income.

The department’s records show that real estate transactions have not increased significantly despite seasonal expectations of improvement. A total of 50,837 deeds were registered nationwide during Magh. While this represents a modest increase compared to the same month last year, officials say the growth is not strong enough to indicate a full market rebound.

Revenue composition data shows that the government collected:

  • Rs 315.87 million from service taxes
  • Rs 2.68 billion from registration fees
  • Rs 1.96 billion from capital gains tax on property transactions

The figures highlight the continued dependence of government revenue on land registration and property transfers, even as transaction volumes fluctuate.

Officials in Kathmandu note that the property market remains sensitive to bank lending conditions, interest rates, and broader economic confidence, all of which continue to influence buying and selling decisions across the country.
