Bhatbhateni Maharajgunj outlet reopens after reconstruction following arson attack

KATHMANDU: The Maharajgunj outlet of has resumed operations from Thursday after undergoing reconstruction in the aftermath of arson, vandalism, and looting during the recent Gen-Z protest movement.

The outlet was among 12 Bhat-Bhateni stores nationwide that were targeted during the unrest, which resulted in significant property damage across multiple locations. The Maharajgunj branch had remained closed since the incident due to extensive structural and inventory losses.

Management confirmed that the outlet has now been fully rebuilt and reopened to the public for regular shopping.

“Better to Rise from Zero”: MD Gurung

Speaking at the reopening, Managing Director Min Bahadur Gurung said the unexpected national incident had deeply affected the company, but emphasized resilience over despair.

“We were hurt by the unforeseen events the country experienced. However, rather than remaining in mourning, rising again from zero is the better option,” Gurung stated.

The company has indicated that reconstruction work is progressing at other affected outlets, with plans to gradually resume operations at remaining damaged locations.

Among the previously attacked stores, the Koteshwor superstore in Kathmandu has already returned to full-capacity operations.

Retail Sector Impact and Recovery

The attacks during the protest movement dealt a blow to Nepal’s organized retail sector, disrupting supply chains, employment, and consumer access. Industry observers note that Bhat-Bhateni’s swift reconstruction effort signals a recovery push in the formal retail economy despite political and social volatility.

With the reopening of the Maharajgunj outlet, the company aims to restore customer confidence, stabilize local employment, and re-establish normal retail services in the area.

Management has not publicly disclosed the total financial loss incurred during the nationwide attacks but reaffirmed its commitment to reopening all affected branches in phases.
