Dubai International Airport temporarily shut after drone strike near fuel facility amid escalating Gulf conflict

KATHMANDU: Operations at Dubai International Airport were temporarily suspended after a drone attack triggered a fire near a fuel storage facility close to the airport, prompting authorities to halt flights as a precautionary measure.

Officials in Dubai said the suspension was implemented to ensure the safety of passengers and airport personnel while emergency teams worked to control the blaze near the aviation fuel infrastructure.

According to the Dubai Media Office, the fire broke out after a drone strike hit a fuel tank located near the airport premises on Monday. Firefighters and emergency response units were immediately deployed to contain the flames and prevent further damage to critical infrastructure surrounding the airport.

Authorities emphasized that the temporary shutdown of flights was a safety precaution while investigations and emergency response operations were underway.

World’s Busiest International Travel Hub Disrupted

The incident has disrupted operations at one of the world’s most important aviation hubs. Dubai International Airport is widely regarded as the busiest international passenger airport globally, handling massive volumes of transit traffic connecting Asia, Europe, and Africa.

According to figures reported by BBC, nearly 90 million passengers traveled through the airport in 2025, highlighting its central role in global aviation and international transit networks.

Rising Regional Tensions Behind Security Concerns

The disruption comes amid intensifying conflict involving Iran, Israel, and the United States, which escalated into open confrontation in late February.

The conflict, which began around February 28, has triggered a sharp increase in missile and drone attacks across the Gulf region. Since the start of hostilities, Arab Gulf states have reportedly faced more than 2,000 missile and drone strikes.

Targets of these attacks have included US diplomatic facilities, military bases, oil infrastructure, ports, airports, hotels, and residential and commercial buildings, underscoring the widening security risks across the region.

UAE Among the Most Affected

Security analysts say the United Arab Emirates has been among the most affected countries due to its strategic position and economic infrastructure.

The UAE normalized diplomatic relations with Israel in 2020 through the Abraham Accords, a move that reshaped regional geopolitics but also increased security vulnerabilities amid escalating regional rivalries.

While the UAE has faced significant security challenges, other Gulf Arab nations have also been affected by the escalating conflict. Several governments in the region have strongly criticized Iran over the growing number of attacks and rising instability.

The temporary closure of Dubai’s main airport underscores the far-reaching consequences of the Middle East conflict, raising concerns about disruptions to global aviation, international trade routes, and the safety of critical infrastructure across the Gulf.
