Sasmit Pokharel: From Kathmandu Metro education advisor to Nepal’s Education Minister

KATHMANDU: Sasmit Pokharel, elected from Kathmandu Constituency-5 under the Rastriya Swatantra Party, has been appointed Nepal’s Minister for Education, marking a rapid rise from policy advisor to Cabinet leadership.

Born on Falgun 1, 2052 BS in Kathmandu, Pokharel holds a Bachelor’s degree in Law and is recognized as a young leader with strong grounding in policy formulation and governance. He is currently a central committee member and joint spokesperson of the party, having built his political journey through alternative politics movements.

Pokharel began his political engagement with the Bibeksheel Sajha Party and has consistently advocated for youth participation and structural reform in governance.

His academic background includes early education in the United States, followed by completion of a BALLB degree from Kathmandu University School of Law. He is also pursuing further studies.

Before entering federal politics, Pokharel played a key role in the team of Prime Minister Balendra Shah during his tenure as Mayor of Kathmandu Metropolitan City. He contributed as an assistant expert in the education sector and later in the Urban Planning Commission.

As an education advisor, Pokharel was actively involved in policy design and implementation, including coordination in the formulation of annual policies, plans, programs, and budgets. He notably led efforts to provide legally structured scholarships to around 20,000 students from Grade 1 to 12 in community schools, prioritizing equitable access to education.

Following the 2015 earthquake, he was also involved in fundraising and management efforts for Nepal through an earthquake relief initiative while based in the United States.

Pokharel’s appointment reflects the government’s push toward technocratic leadership and youth-driven policy reform in Nepal’s education sector.
