KATHMANDU: The government has decided to form a taskforce to prepare a comprehensive discussion paper on constitutional amendments, aiming to build national consensus on key political and institutional reforms.
The decision was taken during Monday’s Cabinet meeting, according to government spokesperson and Minister for Education Sasmit Pokharel.
Multi-Party Representation in Taskforce
As per the decision, the taskforce will be formed under the leadership of the Prime Minister’s political advisor and will include representatives from political parties represented in Parliament.
“The taskforce will be formed with representation from all parliamentary parties to prepare a discussion paper on constitutional amendments,” Minister Pokharel said while announcing Cabinet decisions.
Focus on National Consensus
The government has stated that the primary objective of the taskforce is to draft a “Constitution Amendment Discussion Paper” that reflects broad political agreement.
Officials say the process will aim to make the amendment debate more structured, participatory, and evidence-based, ensuring that diverse political viewpoints are incorporated.
Strategic Step Toward Reform
The move is part of the government’s broader reform agenda, which includes institutional restructuring, governance improvements, and strengthening democratic processes.
By initiating a formal discussion paper, the government seeks to lay the groundwork for future constitutional amendments through consensus rather than unilateral political action.
The formation of the taskforce signals the beginning of a potentially significant political process, as Nepal explores reforms to its constitutional framework through coordinated dialogue among major political stakeholders.
