Gyanendra Shahi RPP lawmaker
KATHMANDU: Lawmaker Gyanendra Shahi has said that his party is ready to support the government in securing a two-thirds majority to abolish Nepal’s provincial structure, while also calling for the restoration of a Hindu state and the monarchy.
Speaking during Thursday’s session of the House of Representatives, Shahi argued that the current federal provincial system has become financially burdensome and politically ineffective.
He claimed that maintaining the provincial structure costs around NPR 100 billion annually and described it as a system created primarily for political accommodation.
“There are 884 lawmakers in the country. Around NPR 10 billion is spent just to sustain the provincial structure. If this House decides to abolish it, we are ready to help secure a two-thirds majority. We can contribute up to 187 votes,” Shahi said.
He further stated that his party is prepared to support constitutional changes aimed at restructuring the state, including the reinstatement of Nepal as a Hindu nation and the restoration of the monarchy, positions that remain highly controversial in Nepal’s contemporary political landscape.
Political Context
Shahi’s remarks come at a time when Nepal’s new parliament has begun its first session following recent elections, with lawmakers debating governance models, fiscal efficiency, and constitutional structure.
The proposal to dismantle the federal system and reinstate the monarchy is expected to trigger strong political debate, as Nepal’s 2015 Constitution established a federal democratic republic structure after decades of political transition.
Observers note that such statements reflect ongoing ideological divisions within Nepal’s political spectrum, particularly regarding federalism, secularism, and the country’s post-monarchy governance model.
