KATHMANDU: The government has appointed Dr. Gunakar Bhatta as the Vice Chair of the National Planning Commission, reinforcing its economic policy leadership at a time of moderate growth and structural challenges.
The decision was made during a Cabinet meeting held on Tuesday, placing a seasoned economist and policy expert at the helm of Nepal’s apex planning body.
Dr. Gunakar Bhatta previously served as an Executive Director at Nepal Rastra Bank, where he was involved in key monetary policy, financial stability, and regulatory frameworks. His tenure at the central bank established him as a technocrat with deep expertise in macroeconomic management.
He was also considered a frontrunner for the position of Governor of Nepal Rastra Bank in the past. However, his appointment did not materialize during the tenure of former Prime Minister KP Sharma Oli, reflecting political dynamics that often shape high-level economic appointments in Nepal.
Beyond his central bank role, Bhatta has served as an economic advisor to the Ministry of Finance, contributing to fiscal policy formulation, economic reforms, and strategic planning initiatives.
With an academic background in management and economics, he is widely regarded as a capable figure in both policy design and implementation.
The National Planning Commission plays a central role in shaping Nepal’s development agenda, including periodic plans, resource allocation strategies, and coordination across ministries.
Bhatta’s appointment comes as Nepal navigates moderate economic recovery, fiscal pressure, and the need for structural reforms in key sectors such as infrastructure, agriculture, and industrial productivity.
Policy observers expect his technocratic background to influence a more data-driven and reform-oriented approach within the Commission, particularly in aligning development planning with macroeconomic realities and investment priorities.
