KATHMANDU: In a significant humanitarian gesture, Qatar has granted royal amnesty to three Nepali nationals on the occasion of the holy month of Ramadan, reinforcing longstanding diplomatic goodwill between the two nations.

According to the Ministry of Foreign Affairs, the amnesty was granted by the Amir of Qatar as part of the country’s customary clemency measures observed during major religious occasions. Ministry spokesperson Lok Bahadur Paudyal Chhetri confirmed that the three Nepali citizens were pardoned under this special provision.

“The royal amnesty extended by the Qatari leadership reflects a humanitarian approach and strong bilateral ties,” the spokesperson stated, adding that the Government of Nepal has formally conveyed its gratitude to Qatari authorities for the gesture.

Strengthening Nepal–Qatar Diplomatic Relations

Nepal and Qatar share deep-rooted diplomatic and labor relations, with Qatar being one of the प्रमुख destinations for Nepali migrant workers. The latest act of clemency is expected to further strengthen bilateral cooperation and mutual trust between the two countries.

Officials noted that such gestures contribute positively to diplomatic engagement, particularly in the context of labor welfare and consular cooperation. The Government of Nepal expressed confidence that this development would deepen ties and enhance collaboration in the future.

Tradition of Amnesty During Ramadan

Granting amnesty during Ramadan is a long-standing tradition in Qatar, where prisoners—particularly foreign nationals—are considered for pardon based on humanitarian grounds and legal provisions. Similar clemency measures have been extended in previous years, benefiting individuals from various countries, including Nepal.

The release of the three Nepali nationals is part of this broader practice, reflecting Qatar’s commitment to compassion and reconciliation during one of the most significant periods in the Islamic calendar.

Diplomatic and Social Impact

The development carries both diplomatic and social significance, especially for the families of the individuals involved. It also highlights the importance of sustained diplomatic engagement in addressing the concerns of Nepali citizens abroad.

With thousands of Nepali workers residing in Qatar, such humanitarian actions are closely watched and often seen as indicators of the strength and responsiveness of bilateral relations.

Nepal’s Ministry of Foreign Affairs reiterated its commitment to safeguarding the rights and welfare of Nepali nationals overseas, while continuing to work closely with host countries like Qatar to ensure fair treatment and legal support when required.
