KATHMANDU – The Government of Nepal has announced the introduction of Value Added Tax (VAT) on electricity consumption, applying a concessional rate on usage above 50 units per month.
Presenting the national budget for fiscal year 2083/84, Finance Minister Dr. Swarnim Wagle said the government will impose VAT at a rate of 13 percent on electricity consumption.
Under the new provision, VAT will be applied only on consumption exceeding 50 units per month for end consumers, ensuring relief for low-usage households.
The government said the measure is designed to broaden the tax base while protecting small consumers who rely on minimal electricity usage.
