KATHMANDU: Bird flu has been detected among animals and birds at the Central Zoo in Jawalakhel, Lalitpur, prompting authorities to shut down the facility indefinitely.
The zoo, operated by the National Trust for Nature Conservation (NTNC), announced the closure through a public notice after laboratory tests confirmed the presence of avian influenza within the zoo premises.
According to the notice, all zoo activities have been suspended with immediate effect to prevent the further spread of the infection and to ensure the safety of visitors, staff, and animals.
“Considering the need to control the spread of bird flu and protect public health, the zoo has been closed to visitors until further notice,” the management said.
Authorities are expected to implement containment and monitoring measures within the zoo while veterinary experts assess the extent of the outbreak. The closure will remain in place until health and wildlife officials determine that the situation is under control.
The Central Zoo is Nepal’s only national zoo and a major recreational and educational destination, attracting thousands of visitors each year.
The latest detection comes as Nepal continues to battle the spread of avian influenza. The outbreak was first reported in Koshi Province in March and has since expanded to 10 districts, raising concerns among animal health authorities.
Officials have urged poultry farmers, wildlife caretakers, and the public to remain vigilant and follow biosecurity measures to help contain the disease.
Further details regarding the specific species affected at the zoo and the scale of the outbreak have yet to be released.
