KATHMANDU: Nepal’s largest annual WordPress and open-source technology conference, WordCamp Kathmandu 2026, will be held on September 18–19, bringing together hundreds of software developers, entrepreneurs, digital marketers, designers and technology professionals from Nepal and abroad to discuss the future of digital innovation, artificial intelligence, cybersecurity and the country’s expanding digital economy.

Organized by WordPress Kathmandu, the two-day conference will take place at Alice Receptions in Gairidhara, with organizers expecting participation from more than 500 national and international attendees representing countries including the United States, several European nations, Bangladesh and India. More than 30 technology experts are scheduled to speak during the event.

This year’s conference will be held under the theme “Where Ancient Culture Meets Open Source,” reflecting an effort to connect the Kathmandu Valley’s rich cultural heritage with the collaborative philosophy that underpins open-source software development. Organizers say the event aims to demonstrate how community-driven technologies can contribute to innovation, entrepreneurship and sustainable digital growth.

The conference will begin with Contributor Day on September 18, where developers, designers, translators, documentation writers and other community members will work together to improve the global WordPress ecosystem. Participants will contribute code, documentation, translations, accessibility improvements and security enhancements designed to make the world’s most widely used content management system more secure, reliable and inclusive.

The second day will feature the main conference, during which internationally recognized speakers and industry experts will deliver presentations on emerging technologies shaping the global digital landscape. Planned discussion areas include artificial intelligence, cybersecurity, advanced search engine optimization (SEO), digital marketing, and the future of open-source technologies, providing Nepali technology professionals with direct exposure to global best practices and industry trends.

According to the organizers, the conference comes at a time when WordPress continues to dominate the global web ecosystem, powering approximately 43 percent of all websites worldwide. As businesses increasingly adopt digital platforms, WordCamp Kathmandu is expected to provide valuable learning opportunities for Nepali web developers, software companies, freelancers, startups and digital agencies seeking to compete in international markets.

Beyond technical knowledge sharing, the conference is expected to strengthen Nepal’s growing digital economy by expanding professional networks between local innovators and international technology communities. Organizers believe such interactions can create new business partnerships, encourage cross-border collaboration and increase opportunities for Nepali professionals to participate in the global digital services market.

WordCamp Kathmandu also builds on the momentum created by previous regional WordCamp events held in Butwal, Pokhara and Bharatpur, which helped decentralize technology education and community engagement beyond the capital city. Those regional conferences contributed to promoting technology tourism while expanding Nepal’s open-source ecosystem across different parts of the country.

The organizers have also continued their emphasis on inclusivity through the Ujwal Thapa Memorial Scholarship, an initiative designed to enable students from marginalized communities to participate in the conference and gain exposure to global technology networks. The scholarship seeks to reduce barriers to entry into the technology sector while fostering greater diversity within Nepal’s digital workforce.

Organizers say Nepal’s growing WordPress community has become an important source of employment and foreign income, enabling thousands of professionals to provide web development, digital marketing, design and technical consulting services to international clients. They argue that strengthening the country’s open-source ecosystem can help generate high-value domestic employment opportunities while reducing the outflow of skilled technology professionals seeking careers abroad.

The conference will also feature a fully digital ticketing system and an inclusive organizational structure aimed at making participation easier for attendees from different backgrounds and regions. According to the organizers, these measures reflect WordCamp’s community-driven approach and commitment to accessible knowledge sharing.

As Nepal continues its digital transformation and seeks to expand its information technology exports, WordCamp Kathmandu 2026 is expected to serve as one of the country’s most significant technology gatherings, providing a platform for knowledge exchange, innovation and international collaboration. Organizers say the event represents another step toward positioning Nepal as an emerging information technology hub in South Asia by promoting open-source innovation, digital entrepreneurship and globally competitive technical talent.
