KATHMANDU: Nepal’s Ministry of Finance is holding a high-level meeting today to take decisive action against growing concerns over revenue leakage, tax evasion, and illegal imports that continue to strain the country’s fiscal system.
The meeting, scheduled for 11:00 AM, will be chaired by Finance Minister Dr. Swarnim Wagle. It will bring together top government officials and security leadership, including Home Minister Sudhan Gurung, representatives from the Office of the Prime Minister and Council of Ministers, and secretaries from the ministries of Finance and Home Affairs.
Senior officials from key enforcement agencies such as Nepal Police and Armed Police Force Nepal are also participating, signaling a coordinated government push to strengthen enforcement against revenue leakage and smuggling.
According to Ministry spokesperson Tank Prasad Pandey, the meeting will run for approximately one hour. Heads of departments and divisions under the Ministry of Finance responsible for revenue administration will also attend.
The discussion is expected to focus on tightening legal enforcement, improving inter-agency coordination, and strengthening monitoring systems to control tax evasion and unauthorized cross-border trade. Minister Wagle is likely to issue key directives aimed at enhancing compliance, strengthening customs oversight, and ensuring stricter action against offenders.
The meeting comes at a time when the Finance Ministry is under increasing pressure to act following the decision to dissolve the Revenue Investigation Department. The move has raised concerns about institutional capacity to control financial irregularities and enforce tax compliance effectively.
Revenue collection remains a critical pillar of Nepal’s economy, directly impacting public expenditure, infrastructure financing, and overall fiscal stability. Persistent leakage poses risks to budget management, weakens governance, and undermines investor confidence.
This high-level meeting is being closely monitored by the private sector, development partners, and policy observers, as Nepal seeks to reinforce its revenue system and align enforcement practices with global standards in public financial management.
