KATHMANDU: The Government of Nepal has approved concessional loans totaling USD 185 million from major international development partners to support key national development initiatives, including digital transformation and sustainable finance reforms.

The decision was made in a recent Cabinet meeting, where the government agreed to mobilize external financing from the World Bank and the Asian Development Bank under highly concessional terms.

Funding for Digital Nepal Transformation Project

Under the Digital Nepal Transformation Project, the government will receive a combined USD 90 million in concessional loans. This includes USD 40 million from the Asian Development Bank and USD 50 million from the World Bank.

The project is aimed at accelerating Nepal’s digital infrastructure, improving e-governance systems, expanding digital public services, and enhancing connectivity across public institutions. Officials say the initiative is a key component of Nepal’s long-term digital economy strategy.

Support for Sustainable and Inclusive Finance

In a separate approval, the government has also agreed to accept USD 95 million in concessional financing from the World Bank for the Sustainable and Inclusive Finance Project.

This initiative is designed to strengthen financial sector stability, promote inclusive access to banking services, and support long-term reforms in Nepal’s financial governance framework. It is also expected to enhance resilience in the banking system and improve resource allocation for priority sectors.
