KATHMANDU: Rabi Lamichhane, chair of the Rastriya Swatantra Party (RSP), has pledged that Nepal’s new parliamentary phase will not witness retaliation or injustice driven by majority power, asserting that good governance efforts will continue without compromise.

Addressing the first meeting of the House of Representatives, Lamichhane stated that the misuse of numerical strength in Parliament to target opposition or protect allies would no longer be tolerated.

“There will be no revenge or oppression based on numbers. Parliamentary committees will not be used to settle scores,” he said.

Commitment to Fairness and Rule of Law

Lamichhane emphasized that discrimination based on political belief or affiliation would end, signaling a shift toward more equitable governance practices.

“In the past, laws were amended to protect allies and trap opponents, and ordinances were introduced for similar purposes. Such wrong practices will be corrected as soon as possible,” he stated.

He further assured that parliamentary conduct would respect due process and freedom of expression.

“No one’s microphone will be cut off unjustly just because certain views are inconvenient. That era will not be repeated,” Lamichhane added.

Focus on Governance, Not Retaliation

While rejecting retaliatory politics, Lamichhane made it clear that anti-corruption and governance reforms would not be slowed down.

“The pace of good governance will not stop. The first right to justice belongs to the families of martyrs—this should not be labeled as revenge,” he said.

Political Significance

Lamichhane’s remarks come at a time when Nepal’s political environment is under scrutiny for past practices involving selective enforcement, politicization of legal frameworks, and parliamentary dominance by ruling coalitions.

His statements are being interpreted as an attempt to position the RSP as a reform-driven force advocating institutional accountability, transparency, and rule-based governance.

The address sets a tone for the new parliament, where expectations are high for systemic reforms, improved legislative discipline, and a departure from past patterns of political retaliation.
