PM Oli stakes a claim for formation of alternative government citing to have support of 153 MPs

KATHMANDU: Amid the alliance of the opposition parties, led by Nepali Congress (NC), set to to stake claim for the new government formation claiming to have the support of 149 lawmakers of the House of Representatives, Prime Minister KP Sharma Oli has submitted a claim to the President for the formation of the new government with the signatures of 153 parliamentarians.

Dr. Rajan Bhattarai, advisor to the Prime Minister Oli, informed that the claim was submitted to the President. Oli has claimed to have support of 121 UML parliamentarians and 32 Janata Samajbadi Party parliamentarians, enough to form a new government under Article 76, Clause 5 of the Constitution.

On the other hand, an alliance of the opposition parties, led by Nepali Congress (NC), has reached the residence of President Bidya Devi Bhandari to stake claim for the new government formation.

The alliance has proposed the name of NC President and Parliamentary Party Leader Sher Bahadur Deuba as the new Prime Minister to succeed incumbent Prime Minister KP Sharma Oli.

Nepali Congress (NC), CPN (Maoist Center), the Upendra Yadav-faction of Janata Samajbadi Party (JSP) and the ruling CPN-UML’s Madhav Nepal faction has claimed to have the support of 149 lawmakers of the House of Representatives (HoR).

Earlier on Thursday, President Bidya Devi Bhandari had called for the formation of a new government based on Article 76 (5) of the Constitution.

Issuing a press statement this evening, the Office of President stated that President Bhandari has called on the members of the House of Representatives to present the basis for the appointment of a new Prime Minister as per Article 76 (5) of the Constitution.

President Bhandari had given deadline of 5 pm on Friday for formation of the new government.

Article 76 (5) of the Constitution states that if any member presents a ground on which he or she can get vote of confidence in the Parliament, the President shall appoint such member as the Prime Minister.
