KP Sharma Oli re-elected UML Chairman with an overwhelming majority

KATHMANDU: The 10th general convention of the CPN-UML, the biggest political party of the country, has reelected KP Sharma Oli as its chairman for the next five years.

Oli has been elected to the top post of the party for the next five years by defeating Bhim Rawal with a huge margin.

The general convention that began on Friday was expected to conclude on Sunday. However, it had got delayed thanks to Oli’s bid to get himself elected unopposed.

In the UML General Convention, voting was conducted through 72 electronic voting machines. Out of 2,153 UML representatives, 2,096 votes were cast. As of 11:15 AM, 57 voters were absent in the election.

Born on the 22nd of February 1952 in Terathum district of Nepal, Oli also served as the Chairman of the Nepal Communist Party (NCP) after the unification of the CPN-UML and the Maoist Center.

He served as the country’s Prime Minister from 11 October 2015 to 3 August 2016. Oli was also the first elected Prime Minister under Nepal’s new constitution.

Along with the post of party chair, voting was held for the post of vice-chairs, secretaries and some central members from various clusters. Meanwhile, the senior vice-chair, general secretary and three deputy general secretaries have already been already elected unopposed.

Around 50 per cent of the office bearers and central committee members of the CPN- UML were elected unanimously at the party’s ongoing 10th National General Convention in Chitwan .Senior vice-chairman, general secretary, deputy general secretaries and some members of the central committee were elected unanimously. According to UML Central Election Commission Chairman Bijay Subba, election will be held for 14 posts of office bearers and central committee members.

Shankar Pokhrel was elected general secretary unanimously, while Pradip Gyawali, Prithvi Subba Gurung, and Bishnu Rimal were elected deputy general secretaries unanimously.
