Industries to face load-shedding amid reduced import of electricity from India

KATHMANDU: Nepal Electricity Authority (NEA) has said that big industries will face load shedding from Wednesday amid reduced import of electricity from India.

According to the NEA, industries will have to undergo power cuts as the power utility has been unable to purchase adequate amounts of electricity from India. NEA will be disrupting power supply to industries during peak hour of electricity demand. Manufacturers have been complaining that they were not facing power cuts for over a month despite NEA’s claim for providing adequate electricity to industries.

NEA’s Managing Director Kulman Ghising said they are unable to provide electricity to industries during night time. “If we are unable to get adequate electricity through bidding in the Indian market, industries will have to face loadshedding for at least next two weeks,” Ghising said.

According to the NEA, India has been struggling to produce sufficient electricity due to an excessive rise in price of coal in the international market triggered by ongoing war between Russia and Ukraine. Nepal imports an average of 300 MW from India to meet the domestic demand.
