NTA implemented MDMS system, illegal imported mobile becoms unusable in Nepal

Are you using a mobile phone brought by a friend or friend from abroad or are you borrowing such a phone? If so, you need to know about the new rules of Nepal Telecommunication Authority

KATHMANDU: Nepal Telecommunication Authority has implemented Mobile Device Management System (MDMS). This system, which was said to be implemented for a long time, was put into operation by the regulator from Thursday.

Along with this, the illegal import, sale, distribution and use of mobile sets will be discouraged and made more systematic and stolen and lost mobile sets will be tracked and blocked to prevent such mobiles from operating within Nepal.

Purushottam Khanal, chairman of NTA, says, “At that time, there was an outbreak of Covid-19. And there was a shortage of telecommunication chips all over the world. We could not implement it due to various reasons. This time, from today, MDMS is implement.”

However, till September 15, 2022 all the mobile sets, including the mobile sets that are brought in individually from abroad, have been arranged to be automatically registered in the MDMS system.

After that, in the case of mobile phones already registered in the authority’s system, operations will continue as usual, while unauthorized imported or brought from abroad by relatives but not registered mobile phones may fall under the new rules.

“It is not our intention to disconnect any user. An SMS will be sent to unregistered mobiles after August 30 and they will have to register accordingly,” he said.

It is said that the IMEI number of the phone can be registered by going to the authority’s website.

But after September 16, when purchasing a mobile phone, it has been requested to make sure that the mobile set is registered in Nepal Telecommunication Authority’s MDMS system (www.mdms.nta.gov.np) or not.

Also, mobile importers and sellers have been informed to take the approval of the authority before importing mobiles and only sell and distribute mobiles that are registered with the authority.
