Nepal will Be self-sufficient in electricity even in dry season by 2026: Ghising

KATHMANDU: The Executive Director of Nepal Electricity Authority, Kulman Ghising, has said that the production of 800 megawatts of electricity is connected every year in the national grid. Ghising stated on Tuesday at the USAID Urja Nepal program titled ‘Financing the Energy Sector in Nepal’ that the country will be self-sufficient in hydropower even during the dry season by 2026.

He stated that the current operational project has a capacity of 2,544 megawatts. It has provided 70 megawatts of solar power. Almost 800 megawatts of electricity are produced each year, with an estimated 7,000 megawatts of electricity produced in the next five years.

Even during the dry season, the country will be self-sufficient in electricity by the end of 2026, and the NEA will provide an additional 2500 megawatts of power.

Ghising stated that the authority estimates that Nepal will have 8,000 megawatts of electricity generation capacity by 2035, and that the capacity will reach 20,000 megawatts by 2042/43.

According to him, 11,000 megawatts of hydropower are currently in the PPA pipeline. A PPA for 7,000 megawatts has also been completed.
