Nepal and Germany Strengthen Bilateral Ties Through Political Consultation Meeting

KATHMANDU: Erik Kurzweil, Ambassador, Indo-Pacific Policy, South Asia and Afghanistan at the German Federal Foreign Office, and Ganesh Prasad Dhakal, Joint Secretary at the Nepal Ministry of Foreign Affairs, concluded a significant Political Consultation Meeting in Kathmandu on Sunday.

The meeting delved into various aspects of bilateral relations between Nepal and Germany, covering a wide array of topics ranging from political matters to cultural cooperation.

Key discussions included the invitation of President Ram Chandra Paudel to Germany, Nepal’s Graduation from Least Developed Country (LDC) status, Cooperation in Climate Change and Energy Sector, Peace Process, Democracy, Social Inclusion, Cooperation in the cultural field, Visa Permits, and Working Status for German NGOs.

Both sides emphasized areas of mutual agreement, with Germany commending Nepal’s commitment to democracy, social inclusion, and the peace process.

Nepal, in turn, appreciated Germany’s support and solidarity, particularly during challenging times such as the invasion of Ukrainian territory by the Russian government.

This year, Germany and Nepal solidified their partnership further by signing a Financial and Technical Cooperation Agreement, accompanied by a grant totaling 56 million euros.

The grant aims to address critical areas such as renewable energy, energy infrastructure, gender equality, maternal and childcare, quality infrastructure for sustainable economic development, health, and local and provincial economic development.

Ambassador Kurzweil underscored the enduring friendship between Nepal and Germany, which dates back to 1958, emphasizing shared values of democracy, inclusion, and equality.

Expressing gratitude, Dhakal highlighted Germany’s consistent support to Nepal, particularly during times of crisis such as the devastating earthquake of 2015 and the ongoing COVID-19 pandemic.

The conclusion of the meeting saw both governments reaffirming their commitment to enhance cooperation, identify mutual benefits, and continue strengthening their partnership for the prosperity and well-being of both nations.
