Gautam Buddha International Airport to implement RNP-AR system for better visibility

KATHMANDU: In response to frequent flight disruptions caused by inadequate visibility, Gautam Buddha International Airport in Bhairahawa is set to introduce the RNP AR (Required Navigation Performance Authorization Required) system. This advanced satellite-based navigation system will become effective from January 24 (Magh 10), according to a notification issued by the Civil Aviation Authority of Nepal (CAAN).

With the implementation of the RNP AR system, aircraft will be able to land with a minimum visibility of just 800 meters, significantly reducing weather-related disruptions. This system, designed based on satellite guidance, offers a modern alternative to the traditional Visual Flight Rules (VFR) and is particularly suitable for areas with complex geography and extreme weather conditions.

Improved Operations with Advanced Technology

The RNP AR system is a concept driven by equipment-based navigation and is known for its effectiveness in challenging terrains and adverse weather. The new system is expected to enhance flight regulation and reduce the impact of visibility constraints.

Training for Nepali Technicians

To ensure a smooth transition, Nepali technicians have already undergone specialized training for operating and managing the RNP AR system.

This upgrade marks a significant step forward in improving the efficiency and reliability of operations at Gautam Buddha International Airport, positioning it to handle flights more effectively even in less-than-ideal weather conditions.
