Finance ministry gears up for 2025-26 budget preparation in Nepal

KATHMANDU: The Ministry of Finance is actively engaged in drafting the budget statement for the upcoming fiscal year 2082/83, incorporating suggestions from various stakeholders to align with national needs and public expectations. According to the secretariat of Deputy Prime Minister and Finance Minister Bishnu Prasad Paudel, the ministry is working diligently to craft a balanced budget within the constraints of available resources.

Finance Ministry spokesperson Shyam Prasad Bhandari stated, “The ministry is advancing budget preparations by considering the country’s needs, public expectations, resource limitations, and stakeholder suggestions.” The secretariat emphasized that Finance Minister Paudel and his team are fully focused on the budget formulation process.

The ministry has conducted extensive consultations with ministries, departments, the National Planning Commission, political parties, public representatives, and experts from relevant sectors. Finance Minister Paudel personally consulted with key figures, including Nepali Congress President Sher Bahadur Deuba and CPN (Maoist Centre) Chairman Pushpa Kamal Dahal.

The ministry also sought input from former finance ministers, former finance secretaries, economists, and representatives from organizations such as the Federation of Nepalese Chambers of Commerce and Industry, the Confederation of Nepalese Industries, and the Nepal Chamber of Commerce. Discussions with development partners were also held to ensure a comprehensive approach.

In addition to expert consultations, the ministry invited public input, receiving suggestions from public representatives, civil society, and various organizations. A public call for budget recommendations was issued earlier, and parliamentary discussions on the government’s policies, programs, and budget principles and priorities have already taken place. The budget’s key priorities include economic recovery, job creation, digital economy development, physical infrastructure expansion, and social security enhancements.

The Economic Survey is scheduled to be presented in Parliament on Jestha 14, 2082 (May 28, 2025), followed by the budget statement on Jestha 15, 2082 (May 29, 2025). The Finance Ministry’s inclusive and consultative approach aims to deliver a budget that addresses Nepal’s pressing economic challenges while fostering sustainable growth and development.
