Nepal’s ambassador to Malta Shanil Nepal presents credentials, signals strengthened bilateral ties

KATHMANDU: His Excellency Shanil Nepal, Ambassador of Nepal to the Kingdom of Spain and concurrently accredited to the Republic of Malta, formally presented his credentials to Her Excellency Myriam Spiteri Debono, President of the Republic of Malta, during a ceremonial event at the Presidential Palace in Valletta. The occasion marked a significant step in deepening the longstanding diplomatic relations between Nepal and Malta.

Ambassador Nepal and his delegation, including his spouse and the Second Secretary of the Embassy of Nepal, were warmly received at their hotel by Malta’s Chief of Protocol and an Aide-de-Camp to the President, who escorted them to the Presidential Palace. Following the credential presentation, Ambassador Nepal held a courtesy meeting with President Spiteri Debono, focusing on enhancing bilateral cooperation in tourism, trade, and climate change adaptation.

During the meeting, President Spiteri Debono congratulated Ambassador Nepal on his appointment and expressed her best wishes for a successful tenure. She praised the contributions of the Nepali diaspora in Malta and urged the Embassy to continue supporting them on consular matters.

In response, Ambassador Nepal conveyed greetings from the President of Nepal and extended the goodwill of the Nepali government and people to Malta. He reaffirmed his commitment to providing quality consular services to the Nepali community and emphasized collaboration in shared challenges like climate change, noting both nations’ significant tourism potential.

President Spiteri Debono lauded Nepal’s reputation as a peace-loving nation committed to the United Nations Charter’s principles. She proposed enhanced cultural and academic exchanges and invited Nepal to participate in the Malta Biennale 2026 by hosting a national pavilion. Ambassador Nepal expressed gratitude for the proposal, assuring the President that it would be seriously considered and pursued diligently.

After the meeting, Ambassador Nepal signed the visitors’ book at the Palace and was honored with a Guard of Honor in the Principal Courtyard. He also attended a luncheon hosted by the President, where further discussions on academic collaboration and other cooperative prospects took place. The ceremony was attended by officials from Malta’s Ministry for Foreign Affairs and Tourism and the Office of the President.

This diplomatic engagement underscores the growing ties between Nepal and Malta, with both nations poised to explore new avenues for partnership in trade, tourism, and sustainable development.
