Government to divest 30% of Nepal Telecom shares to public

KATHMANDU: The government has announced plans to reduce its ownership in Nepal Telecom by divesting 30% of its shares to the public.

During the budget presentation for the fiscal year 2082/83 (2025/26), Finance Minister Bishnu Paudel revealed that an additional 22% of shares will be divested, bringing the government’s current 92% ownership in Nepal Telecom down to 30%.

This move aims to make the state-owned telecom company more competitive with the private sector and enhance its service efficiency.

The decision is expected to encourage private sector participation and improve Nepal Telecom’s operational effectiveness in the telecommunications market.
