KATHMANDU: President Donald Trump has signed a proclamation banning nationals from 12 countries from entering the United States, effective June 9, 2025.
The fully restricted countries include Afghanistan, Burma, Chad, Republic of the Congo, Equatorial Guinea, Eritrea, Haiti, Iran, Libya, Somalia, Sudan, and Yemen. Additionally, partial restrictions apply to seven nations: Burundi, Cuba, Laos, Sierra Leone, Togo, Turkmenistan, and Venezuela.
The White House stated that the measure aims to protect national security by addressing deficiencies in vetting and screening processes, citing high visa overstay rates and inadequate identity management in the affected countries.
The decision has sparked criticism, with groups like Oxfam warning that it will disproportionately harm families fleeing conflict.
