KATHMANDU: Air India Flight AI171, a Boeing 787-8 Dreamliner (VT-ANB), crashed shortly after takeoff from Sardar Vallabhbhai Patel International Airport in Ahmedabad, Gujarat, on Thursday at 1:38 PM IST, en route to London Gatwick. The flight, carrying 242 passengers and crew, including 169 Indians, 53 British nationals, and one Canadian, plunged into the Meghani Nagar residential area, erupting in flames and sending thick black smoke into the sky.
Rescue operations are underway, with fire services, police, and medical teams rushing to the site. Gujarat Chief Minister Bhupendra Patel ordered immediate relief efforts, including a green corridor for transporting the injured. The airport has been temporarily shut down, suspending all flight operations.
Air India confirmed the incident, stating, “Flight AI171, operating Ahmedabad-London Gatwick, was involved in an incident today, 12 June 2025.” The Directorate General of Civil Aviation (DGCA) reported the plane lost signal seconds after reaching a maximum altitude of 625 feet.
