UAE sets minimum wage for Nepali workers at 1,000 dirhams and above

KATHMANDU: The Government of Nepal has implemented a decision to set the minimum wage for Nepali workers in the United Arab Emirates (UAE) at 1,000 dirhams or higher, as published in the Nepal Gazette on Monday.

According to the notice, manpower companies are now prohibited from sending workers to the UAE with salaries below the stipulated minimum. The government had decided to increase the minimum wage in mid-May, and the decision has come into effect following its publication in the Gazette.

Job demand letters offering wages or benefits below 1,000 dirhams will not be certified by the government. Previously, the minimum wage for unskilled workers in the UAE was set at 800 dirhams. Under the new wage structure, unskilled workers will receive a minimum salary of 1,000 dirhams, plus a monthly food allowance of at least 400 dirhams, totaling 1,400 dirhams or more. For semi-skilled workers, the minimum wage is set at 1,200 dirhams, with a 400-dirham food allowance, totaling at least 1,600 dirhams.

For skilled workers, the minimum wage is 1,500 dirhams, with a food allowance of 400 dirhams or more, resulting in a total of at least 1,900 dirhams. Highly skilled workers must receive a minimum wage of 6,000 dirhams, plus a 400-dirham food allowance, totaling 6,400 dirhams or above.

This move is expected to ensure better financial security for Nepali workers in the UAE.
