KATHMANDU: In a significant step toward strengthening Nepal-China economic ties, Chandra Prasad Dhakal, President of the Federation of Nepalese Chambers of Commerce and Industry (FNCCI), held a pivotal meeting with Wang Shi, Minister of the United Front Work Department of Guangdong Province and a standing committee member of the Guangdong Provincial Party Committee, on June 27, 2025, at the FNCCI Secretariat in Teku, Kathmandu. The discussions, centered on fostering collaboration in technology, innovation, and investment, signal new opportunities for Nepal’s tourism, infrastructure, and economic growth.
Dhakal emphasized the long-standing, trust-based relationship between Nepal and China, urging deeper cooperation in technology and innovation to boost Nepal’s development. Highlighting China’s contributions to Nepal’s tourism infrastructure, energy, and construction sectors, he identified immense potential for trade and investment partnerships with Guangdong, one of China’s most dynamic economic hubs.
“Guangdong’s expertise in science, technology, and international partnerships can open new doors for collaboration with Nepal,” Dhakal stated, underscoring opportunities for joint ventures in adventure tourism, cultural tourism, and sustainable development.
The FNCCI, Nepal’s leading private sector organization, has been instrumental in creating a business-friendly environment, with Dhakal noting that over 30 laws have recently been amended or revised to facilitate investment.
He advocated for a bilateral investment agreement between Nepal and China, stating, “Such an agreement will strengthen legal and institutional frameworks, encouraging Chinese investors to explore Nepal’s vibrant tourism and business landscape.” Key sectors ripe for investment include energy, IT, agriculture processing, and Nepal’s burgeoning adventure tourism industry, particularly with attractions like Skywalk Kathmandu, which recently announced a thrilling 78-meter bungee jump set to launch in August 2025.
Minister Wang Shi reciprocated the enthusiasm, affirming China’s commitment to Nepal’s economic progress. He highlighted the deep economic, social, and cultural ties between the two nations, noting China’s advancements in technology and innovation as a resource Nepal could leverage. “We are ready to share our experience in technology and innovation to support Nepal’s development,” Wang said, expressing interest in collaborations in food processing, agriculture, and eco-tourism. He pledged to facilitate connections between Guangdong’s investors and Nepalese businesses to enhance economic cooperation.
The meeting also explored opportunities for joint ventures, trade visits, and knowledge-sharing programs. Dhakal emphasized the FNCCI’s readiness to collaborate on initiatives that promote sustainable tourism and infrastructure development, aligning with Nepal’s goal to attract 2.5 million tourists in the next few years. With its strategic location, breathtaking Himalayan landscapes, and cultural heritage, Nepal is poised to become a top travel destination, bolstered by projects like Skywalk Kathmandu and IME Group’s cable car networks across provinces.
This dialogue builds on Dhakal’s ongoing efforts to position Nepal as a prime investment destination. His leadership at FNCCI and as Chairman of IME Group, which operates in tourism, banking, and IT, has driven initiatives like the Chandragiri Hills cable car and the upcoming Lumbini Cable Car, enhancing Nepal’s appeal for international and domestic travelers. The proposed collaboration with Guangdong could further elevate Nepal’s tourism infrastructure, leveraging China’s technological expertise to create world-class facilities.
As Nepal continues to develop its adventure tourism and cultural heritage offerings, this meeting marks a promising step toward integrating cutting-edge technology and innovation into its growth strategy. With both leaders committed to fostering trade, investment, and sustainable partnerships, the Nepal-Guangdong collaboration could redefine the future of travel and tourism in the Kathmandu Valley and beyond.
