Microsoft shuts down local office in Pakistan amid global restructuring

KATHMANDU: Microsoft has officially shut down its liaison office in Pakistan after over 25 years of operation, as part of its global restructuring strategy. The decision affects five local employees and marks a significant shift in how the tech giant manages its presence in the South Asian market.

According to former Microsoft Pakistan Country Head Jawwad Rehman, the company’s exit from its physical office reflects a strategic pivot towards a cloud-first, partner-led model. Despite the closure, Microsoft confirmed that all services, licensing, and customer support will continue through certified local partners and regional hubs.

Pakistan’s Ministry of IT clarified that the move should not be seen as Microsoft exiting the Pakistani market but rather a transformation in delivery mechanisms aligned with global trends. However, industry experts warn the closure signals broader concerns about Pakistan’s unstable business climate.

Rehman noted that Microsoft had once considered expanding operations in Pakistan but eventually chose other countries like Vietnam due to governance and investment issues. Analysts link the shift to Microsoft’s growing focus on AI, SaaS, and digital platforms.

The closure highlights the need for better policy frameworks to retain and attract global tech investments in Pakistan’s digital economy.
