KATHMANDU: The Election Commission of Nepal (ECN) has officially endorsed the schedule for the House of Representatives (HoR) elections, set for March 5, 2026 (Falgun 21, 2082 BS). The decision was made during a meeting of the Commission on Monday.
According to the approved election calendar, political parties must register for election purposes from Mangsir 1 to 10 (November 16–25, 2025). Only parties already registered with the EC will be eligible to apply for participation. The Commission has urged political parties intending to contest the elections to complete the registration process within the stipulated period.
For the first-past-the-post (FPTP) electoral system, district election offices will be established beginning Magh 2 (January 16, 2026). Similarly, for the proportional representation (PR) system, election offices will be set up by Mangsir 15 (November 30, 2025).
Under the schedule, political parties must submit their closed lists for the PR system on Poush 18 and 19 (January 2 and 3, 2026).
The Commission announced that election campaigning will take place from Falgun 3 to 18 (February 15–March 2, 2026), after which a silence period will begin until the voting day. Polls will be held on Falgun 21 (March 5, 2026), from 7 a.m. to 5 p.m., followed immediately by the collection and counting of ballot boxes for both electoral systems.
The ECN further stated that the coordination and cooperation with political parties and stakeholders will continue throughout the election period, and regular consultations will be held to ensure smooth execution of the process.
In its statement, the Commission clarified that only political parties legally registered and recognized by the EC will be allowed to register for the upcoming polls. It also instructed interested groups to obtain their registration certificates before Kartik 30 (November 15, 2025) to be eligible for participation.
The ECN emphasized that the new election schedule aims to uphold free, fair, and credible elections, aligning with Nepal’s constitutional mandate to complete the parliamentary term within the given timeframe.
