Nepal Telecom launches nationwide online KYC update service for prepaid GSM users

KATHMANDU: Nepal Telecom (NTC) has rolled out a nationwide online Know Your Customer (KYC) update system, allowing GSM prepaid SIM users to update their personal details digitally, in a move aimed at improving customer convenience and strengthening subscriber data accuracy.

The state-owned telecom operator said the service, introduced to simplify customer verification procedures, is now available through all its offices across the country. The system was initially piloted on Poush 22 from the Sundhara Telecommunications Office. Following the test phase, NTC formally expanded the facility nationwide from Magh 22, 2082 BS, coinciding with the company’s 22nd anniversary.

Under the new system, customers who need to correct their name or other personal information linked to their SIM card can submit updates through the NTC customer login portal. Users must verify their identity using a One-Time Password (OTP) sent to the registered mobile number before entering revised personal data.

As part of the online form, customers are also required to provide details including their updated identity information and the five mobile numbers they frequently call, which serves as an additional verification layer within the operator’s customer authentication process.

After completing the online submission, subscribers must visit the nearest Nepal Telecom office or customer service center for final verification. Based on the submitted data, NTC’s system will authenticate and officially update the customer’s KYC records.

NTC officials say the initiative is particularly important as a large number of subscribers still have outdated or incomplete personal records in the telecom database. Accurate KYC data is critical not only for regulatory compliance in the telecommunications sector but also for enhancing digital security, fraud prevention, and service delivery.

In a press statement, Nepal Telecom spokesperson Rabindra Manandhar said the online update mechanism is expected to make it easier for customers to maintain accurate records, which can also support consistency of personal data across other government institutions.

The move aligns with broader digital transformation efforts in Nepal’s telecom and public service sectors, where online identity verification and electronic service delivery are increasingly being prioritized. By enabling self-service KYC updates, NTC aims to reduce physical visits, improve operational efficiency, and modernize customer management systems across its nationwide network.
