KATHMANDU: Nepal’s Prime Minister Balen Shah has been included in the 2026 list of the world’s 100 most influential people published by TIME, marking a significant global recognition for the country’s new political leadership.

The annual TIME list, considered one of the most prestigious global influence rankings, features a wide spectrum of leaders shaping politics, business, and society. Prime Minister Shah appears alongside major global figures such as U.S. President Donald Trump and Chinese President Xi Jinping, highlighting his growing international visibility.

In its profile, TIME attributes Shah’s political rise to widespread dissatisfaction among Nepali citizens with traditional political parties and governance systems. The magazine references his earlier public remarks criticizing entrenched political culture, noting that voters placed their trust in him as an alternative figure capable of delivering reform and accountability.

Shah, 35, transitioned from a career as a hip-hop artist and civil engineer into politics, initially gaining national attention after winning the Kathmandu mayoral election as an independent candidate. His tenure as mayor was marked by efforts to improve urban governance, particularly in waste management, education, healthcare, and administrative efficiency.

Following his rise to national politics, Shah assumed the office of Prime Minister, positioning himself as a reform-oriented leader advocating for structural changes in governance, economic management, and public service delivery. His leadership has been closely watched both domestically and internationally as a test case of whether non-traditional political figures can effectively lead at the national level.

International observers have interpreted Shah’s elevation to the premiership as part of a broader regional shift in South Asia, where voters are increasingly challenging legacy political systems and seeking new leadership models. His governance style—combining technocratic decision-making with direct public engagement—has been viewed as a departure from conventional political practices in Nepal.

Since becoming Prime Minister, Shah has emphasized policy reforms aimed at improving service delivery, enhancing transparency, and addressing long-standing inefficiencies within state institutions. However, analysts note that translating reformist ambitions into measurable outcomes remains a complex task, given Nepal’s institutional constraints and political dynamics.

TIME notes that global attention is now focused on whether Prime Minister Shah can expand the momentum he built at the local level into sustained national transformation. The coming years are expected to test his ability to implement reforms, manage political opposition, and deliver on the high expectations that accompanied his rise.

His inclusion in the TIME 100 list is expected to further elevate Nepal’s profile on the global stage, while also intensifying domestic discourse on governance, reform, and the future direction of the country under his leadership.
