KATHMANDU: Two immigration officers at Tribhuvan International Airport have been relieved of their duties after being accused of engaging in unauthorized and unlawful practices while processing outbound Nepali travelers.
According to Department of Immigration Nepal, the officers were found to have acted outside existing legal provisions and departmental decisions. Director and spokesperson Tikaram Dhakal confirmed that both officials have been removed from their responsibilities pending further investigation.
The controversy centers around allegations that the officers wrote “Employment Prohibited” along with a validity note—“travel valid until June 10, 2026”—on the departure stamps of Nepali citizens traveling to the United Arab Emirates. The annotation reportedly imposed a condition not recognized under Nepal’s immigration laws or policies.
Following the incident, the department formed an internal investigation committee to examine the matter. Officials stated that the probe is ongoing and will determine the extent of procedural violations and accountability.
In an official statement, the department clarified that there is no policy, directive, or legal provision that allows immigration authorities to impose conditional travel restrictions such as employment bans while granting departure clearance to Nepali citizens.
The case has raised broader concerns about administrative overreach, due process, and the rights of outbound migrant workers—particularly at a time when Nepal continues to rely heavily on foreign employment, especially in Gulf countries like the UAE. Authorities have indicated that further action will be taken based on the findings of the investigation committee.
