KATHMANDU: Nepal and the United States have held high-level discussions focusing on expanding bilateral cooperation, investment promotion, and economic reform priorities following Nepal’s recent elections.

Finance Minister Dr. Swarnim Wagle met with U.S. Assistant Secretary of State S. Paul Kapur on Tuesday (April 21, 2026) at the Ministry of Finance in Singha Durbar.

During the meeting, both sides discussed potential areas of partnership between the newly formed Government of Nepal and the United States, with a particular focus on investment facilitation and strengthening bilateral cooperation.

🇳🇵 Nepal Prioritizes Governance Reform and Investment Climate

Finance Minister Wagle highlighted that the government’s key priorities include good governance, economic reform, and the development of quality physical infrastructure. He emphasized that the government is working to repeal outdated laws and introduce new legal frameworks to create a more investment-friendly environment.

He also pointed to strong opportunities for foreign and non-resident Nepali investors, especially in sectors such as tourism, clean energy, and information technology.

🇺🇸 US Signals Continued Support and Engagement

Assistant Secretary Kapur noted that Nepal–US relations are expected to grow stronger in the coming years. He stated that the U.S. government and public are closely observing Nepal’s reform agenda following the peaceful elections and expressed a positive outlook on the government’s initiatives.

Kapur also stressed the importance of enhancing trade relations and leveraging partnerships with institutions such as the US International Development Finance Corporation, noting that both countries could benefit from deeper economic collaboration.

High-Level Participation

The meeting was attended by senior officials from both sides, including Finance Secretary Dr. Ghanshyam Upadhyaya, officials from the Ministry of Finance and the Ministry of Foreign Affairs, as well as Acting U.S. Ambassador to Nepal Scott Urbom and representatives from the U.S. Embassy in Kathmandu.

The discussions reflect growing momentum in Nepal–US economic engagement, particularly in areas aligned with Nepal’s development priorities and global investment trends.
