KATHMANDU: Nepal Stock Exchange (NEPSE) Chairman Hemant Basyaal has stepped down from his position, submitting his resignation to the Ministry of Finance Nepal on Monday.

According to sources, Basyaal formally handed over his resignation letter at the ministry, although he has not disclosed any reasons behind his sudden departure. The development comes at a time when Nepal’s capital market is undergoing structural adjustments and policy scrutiny.

Basyaal was appointed as NEPSE Chairman on Bhadra 20, 2082 (early September 2025). Prior to his appointment, he served as the Chief Executive Officer of NRN Infrastructure and Development Company, bringing private sector experience into the country’s stock market leadership.

His resignation has raised questions among investors and market participants regarding leadership continuity at NEPSE, especially amid ongoing discussions around market reforms, digital trading systems, and regulatory modernization.

Officials at the Ministry of Finance have yet to make a formal announcement regarding the acceptance of his resignation or the appointment of a successor.

The unexpected exit of the NEPSE chief is likely to have short-term implications for investor sentiment in Nepal’s secondary market, which has already been facing volatility driven by liquidity constraints, interest rate fluctuations, and evolving regulatory policies.
